Bone graft materials research
Explore detailed descriptions that highlight my work on bone graft substitute materials.
The mineral component of bone is largely composed of Hydroxyapatite (HA), which is a Calcium-Phosphate based material. Hydroxyapatite is the preferred choice as a bone graft material due to its chemical, structural, and functional similarity to the mineral composition of bone and teeth. We have produced phase pure Hydroxyapatite from bovine bones using a range of techniques that completely remove the organic component and provide 100% assurance that it is disease- and prion-free. The material was extensively tested for its mechanical, chemical, and biocompatible properties and found to have similar or better characteristics and properties to those available currently on the market. Hence, our BHA can be considered a biosimilar therapeutic product with assured quality, safety, and efficacy.

Biomimetic Solutions Pvt Ltd.
Four professionals from three universities have come together to form Biomimetic Solutions Pvt Limited, with the aim of producing bone graft material locally in Sri Lanka.
Currently, the team is in the process of establishing a production facility at SLINTEC and seeking approval from the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA). Once this project is successfully implemented, it is anticipated to greatly benefit patients across Sri Lanka by providing access to high-quality bone graft materials produced at a significantly lower cost than imported alternatives. This initiative not only aims to enhance patient care but also encourages local innovation and economic growth in the country's healthcare sector.
